COMMUNITY: LIVING ROOF

The Living Roof community garden project is an innovative urban agriculture initiative that sits atop the St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island, NY.

In 2014, Greensulate was brought in to convert the 13,000 sq. ft. rooftop greenspace into Staten Island's first rooftop farm, introducing over 7,000 sq. ft. of farm space to be used for edibles production. The remaining vegetative areas were planted with sedums and grasses to maintain an aesthetic appeal.

Greensulate works with volunteers, educational institutions and community partners to oversee the maintenance and development of the planting areas. In addition, The Living Roof and Greensulate team with New York organizations and nonprofits to continuously utilize this space for volunteer and learning opportunities.

All produce is donated to local food pantries, promoting healthy eating for underserved communities. In addition, The Living Roof project is committed to providing the education needed to reconnect the community with food production and the natural environment.

With its very public location, The Living Roof continues to be a showcase for urban rooftop agriculture.

Groups:

Any group looking to volunteer on The Living Roof is sure to be accomodated. Whether it’s a school field trip, industry related or just yourself and a few close friends, a Greensulate representative will be on hand to instruct and educate on best urban agricultural practices. Reach out to grow@greensulate.com to schedule your next group outing up on the roof!

Individuals:

Don’t have the opportunity or space to farm at home? With The Living Roof, Greensulate is always looking for volunteers willing to get their hands dirty! Join us in producing edibles that directly benefit the local Staten Island community by reaching out to grow@greensulate.com.

GETTING INVOLVED:

Having a significant impact on reducing the earth’s carbon footprint doesn’t always mean large sustainable initiatives, but relies also on the many small acts that help “green” your daily life.

Become a Green Ambassador and learn what your impact is and how you can make a difference. Volunteer at The Living Roof or reach out with any questions you have about how to “go green.”

Environmentally, the world needs a drastic shift. Let's green the world, together!
